Disaster Action, Inc.
TSA’s Disaster Action, Inc. is a non-profit corporation that was formed in July 1971, whose Bylaws were updated in April 2008. It was created as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Texas Society of Architects (TSA) to provide a tax-free mechanism through which the design professions and other allied groups could respond quickly and effectively to the restoration needs of the people of any community in Texas when their living and working shelters are ravaged by a disaster. The idea was conceived by members of TSA out of the belief that disaster restoration could improve living conditions over those that existed prior to the disaster.
The corporation’s Board of Directors are the Executive Committee Members of TSA, whose terms run concurrently with their terms as Executive Committee members of TSA. This structure accomplishes several things: 1) ensures continuity of the intent and policies of the Corporation 2) eliminates the need for separate elections; 3) simplifies procedures; and 4) allows the routine business matters of the Corporation to be handled at regular TSA Executive Committee meetings.
The "Disaster Assistance Handbook for Texas Architects" was created as a resource for volunteers and was approved by the TSA Board on October 22, 2009.
Volunteer architects have certain protections afforded to them by Federal law and Texas law.
TSA Disaster Action Committee (DAC)
The DAC is a committee within TSA, separate from the DAI Corporation, whose charge is to assist DAI in managing and organizing the volunteer-architect efforts. The DAC chair, and members, are appointed by the TSA President each year. Committee members are selected from the TSA membership, drawing on those with disaster-recovery experience or training.

TSA DAC Chapter Liaisons
The DAC Chapter Liaisons are appointed by the TSA President each year and represent each AIA chapter in the region. The Liaison appointee should be interested in disaster action activities and should be in a position to encourage members of the chapter and other professions in the community to volunteer for service.

TSA Disaster Action Team
The Disaster Action Team is made up of volunteers on the ground in the area in which disaster has struck. This team is assembled by DAC members, with the help of DAC Chapter Liaisons contemporaneous, or prior to, the disaster. The Team is composed entirely of volunteers who can disengage themselves from their normal responsibilities to serve on the team within the disaster area declared by the Governor. Members are principally drawn from the design professions.
